Collaboration, networking keys to continued success for members

In April, SMACNA Greater Chicago leaders met with the presidents of Local 73 and Local 265. This “Blue Sky” meeting gave us all a chance to have open, honest discussions and consider more opportunities for collaboration and partnership in the future. As an industry, we all face the same challenges, whether we’re on the labor side of the fence or on the management side. Apprentice portability, general recruitment, organizing and implementing technology were all discussed during this productive meeting. We’re optimistic for a refreshed relationship between our association and valued union counterparts!

Spring kept members busy and summer work is ramping up. Naturally, we’ve seen increased demand for residential and commercial systems in compliance with the EPA’s new refrigerant regulations — and with it, increased costs and lead times. There’s also a fair amount of uncertainty on the effects of the government’s tariffs on the sheet metal industry. The policies have been unpredictable at best, so be sure to keep an eye on helpful information coming from SMACNA’s Government Affairs team. Locally, our members dove into the topic with a panel of industry experts during our May membership meeting, coming away with some real-world strategies to help mitigate risks. Read page 22 for a recap.

There will always be new challenges that arise within our industry, but the best way to face them is by having a strong support network of colleagues, peers and friends. This summer, be sure to join us aboard the Chicago Odyssey for our Summer Outing, complete with an architecture cruise and delicious brunch. In August, we’ll host our popular Golf Outing, and in September we’ll once again combine music and networking at our annual Industry Night event. There’s always something happening, so be sure to take advantage of our many educational and networking opportunities!
